Delhi - How to get there:

By Airways:
Delhi is the gateway city for northern India with a modern airport. All major airlines in the world fly through Delhi. Thr Delhi airport is named as Indira Gandhi International Airport which is located 23 km south-west of Central Delhi and the domestic terminal at Palam is 5 km away from the international terminal.

By Railways:
Delhi is linked by Express trains to all parts of the country. The city has three major railway stations in New Delhi, Old Delhi & H.Nizammudddin. New Delhi station is within walking distance of Connaught Place and Main Delhi station is about 7km from Connaught Place.

By Roadways:
Buses from all the major places in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are available for getting to Delhi. During the summer months, air-conditioned coaches are recommended.

Delhi is the sixth most populated metropolis in the world with a population of 15.3 million (2005 figure).

History of Delhi
Delhi was the capital of several empires in ancient India and has over 60,000 recognized monuments built over several millennia. It is believed to be the site of Indraprastha, founded by the Pandavas of the Mahabharata around 5000 BC. Hindu texts state that the city of Delhi used to be referred to in Sanskrit as Hastinapur, which means "elephant-city".

When to visit
Summer in Delhi is difficult - from April the temperature climbs to more than 45°C (113°F) in May and June and the heat continues till October.
From November to March is the best time to visit, with cool but sunny weather.

Red Fort
One of the most spectacular monument of Mughal Architecture is the Lal Quila or the Red Fort. Built by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan between 1638 and 1648, the Red Fort has walls extending up to 2 km in length with the height varying from 18 mt on the river side to 33 mt on the city side.
For maintenance reason Red Fort remains closed on every Monday.

India Gate
Situated on the Rajpath, India Gate is a monument built by Edwin Lutyens to commemorate the Indian soldiers who died in the World War I and the Afghan Wars. The foundation stone was laid on 10th February 1921 by the Duke of Connaught. The names of the soldiers who died in these wars are inscribed on the walls. It was completed in 1931.

Qutab Minar
The 239 ft sandstone tower is an Indo-Islamic architectural wonder of ancient India. This magnificent tower of victory stands in the Qutab Complex located at Aurabindo Marg, near Mehrauli, 14 Km south of Connaught place in Delhi.

Jama Masjid
It is situated in the ancient town of Old Delhi. The Jama or Jami Masjid is the final architectural extravaganza of the Mughal Emperor, Shahjahan. This monument was built between 1644 and 1658 by five thousand artisans. On the east, this monument faces the Lal Quila (Red Fort).

Mughal Garden
Mughal Empire built this garden and hence the name. The founder of this empire was Babur. The Mughal Garden covers an area of 13 acres and is divided into four parts. The Garden is located in Rashtratapi Bhavan.

Indian Parliament
Parliament is the supreme legislative body of a country. The Parliament comprises of the President and the two Houses—Lok Sabha (House of the People) and Rajya Sabha. The Constitution of India came into force on January 26, 1950.

Purana Quila
Purana Qila means Old Fort which stands on the site where the ancient city of Indraprashtha is believed to have existed. The Old Fort was the citadel of the city of Dinapanah which Humayun started building in 1533 and completed five years later. The most attractive tomb in Delhi - Humayuns Tomb also lies in this area but outside the walls of the Old Fort. Built by Humayuns widow Haji Begum in 1564.
