Mount Abu - How to get there:

By Airways:
Udaipur is the nearest airport. Daily flight form Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur are available to Udaipur Flight is also from Ammedabad (210 Km.)

By Railways:
The railhead at the Abu Road is at a distance of 27 km from Mount Abu. There are regular trains that link Mount Abu with other places like Ahmedabad, Delhi, Jodhpur, and Agra.

By Roadways:
The excellent road network links Mount Abu with the other places. Bus services, jeeps, and taxis cater to the need of the local transport. Direct buses link Mount Abu with Udaipur and Ahmedabad.

History
Mount Abu was once a part of the Chauhan kingdom of Rajasthan and served as a summer resort for the Rajput kings of the region. Later it was leased by the British Govt. from the then Maharaja of Sirohi for use as the headquarters of the resident to Rajputana.

Summer time is the best time to visit Mount Abu.


Tourist Attractions

Dilwara Temples

Mount Abu is famous for it`s magnificent Jain temples. These temples are situated amongst mango groves and carved in marbles. Dilwara temples enshrine various Jain tirthankaras and saints. Built between the 11th and 13th century, they are famous for their superb carvings in marble.

Vimal Vasahi is the oldest temple, was built by Vimal Shah, Minister of Solanki ruler of Gujarat in 1031 A.D. It is dedicated to Adinath, the first of the Jain tirthankaras. Constructed out of white marble from Arasoori Hill, near Ambaji, 23 km from Abu Road, It is an outstanding example of Jain temple architecture.

Nakki Lake
Nakki Lake is virtually in the heart of Mt Abu and is a big attraction for tourist. The lake takes its name from the legend that it was scooped out by a god, using only his nails or, nakh. It`s a pleasant stroll around the lake – look for the strange rock formations.

It is popular spot for boating and the only artificial lake in India that is 1200 mts. above sea level. The surrounding hills have several area of interest.

Toad Rock
Overhanging the Nakki Lake, this rock is so called because of its likeness to gigantic toad about to leap into the water.

Adhar Devi Temple
It Is 2-km North Of Town. This ancient temple dedicated to the serpent goddess, Arbuda, and is carved out of a huge rock. Arbuda is the patron of the town, who formed the mountain in order to save the sacred cow, Nandi from drowning in an abyss. The black-painted marble idol, riding a solid gold tiger, is claimed to be about 5,000 years old.

Gaumukh Temple
Dedicated to Rama, this small temple (the cow’s mouth) is centered on a spring gushing from the mouth of a marble cow. In the Hindu creation myth, a cow, licking salt, forms the world; the source of the Ganges has the same name. This is said to be the site of the ancient “agni-kund” fire rituals. It is 4 kms south of Mount Abu.

Sunset Point
It provides a lovely view of the setting sun, South-West of Nakki lake, where the sun gradually drowns itself in the sky between two mountain peaks, steps lead up to high terrace which offers an astonishing view of the setting sun.

Honeymoon Point
The area gets its name from the scores of honeymoon couples that frequent it. Also known as the Andra Point, it offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape.

Om Shanti Bhawan
It was founded in 1983 and situated near Pandav Bhawan H.Q. of Brahma Kumari`s world spiritual university. It contains an Art gallery, spiritual museum, and oval shaped Raj yoga meditation room along with Universal peace hall. This is the first biggest hall in the state, 3rd in the country and 5th in Asia.

Govt. Museum
The museum was set up in 1962 within the premises of Raj Bhawan to preserve the archaeological wealth of the region.

EXCURSIONS

Gurushikhar
It is 15 Kms from Mount Abu. The highest peak on the mount (1722 mts above the sea level) allows a bird eye view of the sylvan surroundings of Mount Abu. A small shrine and a temple of Dattatreya standing on the shikhar are worth to visit.

Achalgarh
It is 11 kms from Mount Abu. Medieval monument of Mt Abu is the Achalgarh fort commissioned by Rana Kumbha, who was responsible for dozens of gigantic fortresses in southern Rajasthan, with massive battlemented walls and a situation on a mountain peak offering great views.

Ambaji
At a distance of 65 Kms from Palanpur and 45 Kms from Mt. Abu near Gujarat Rajasthan border, the religious town of Ambaji is located. This town is famous for the Maa Ambaji temple, one of the richest and holiest temples in Gujarat attracting lakhs of pilgrims from Gujarat and neighboring Rajasthan every year. The original seat of Ambaji Mata is on Gabbar Hilltop, which is 3 Kms away from Ambaji town. Ambaji Mata temple is one of the 51 shakti peeths where it is believed the heart of Goddess Parvati fell.

FESTIVALS

Summer Festival
The Summer Festival is held every year in the month of Aashadh (1-3 June). The three-day festival is a feast of folk and classical music and a window to the tribal life and culture of Rajasthan. The festival begins with the singing of a ballad, which is followed by Gair, Ghoomar and Daph folk dances, which enthrall the spectators.

Gangaur Festival
It is held in March – April. A festival for young maids and married, dedicated to Gauri, the incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Women pray for prosperity and long life of their husbands, while girls seek good husbands from the goddess. Colourful processions are taken out with pomp and gaiety.

Gangaur hold a special place for the Garasia tribal, inhabitants of the Siorhi - Mt. Abu region. They celebrate this festival over one month. The tribal youth get an opportunity to meet and mingle freely, select a life partner of their choice and marry by eloping.

Patotasav
It is celebrated at Shri Raghunathji Temple in Month of March.
